Save Money, Make Your Own Damn Drinks!

Cocktails are a fun treat, but let’s be real, who wants to pay $13 for a strawberry daiquiri? Nobody!

In general, I prefer to buy a bottle and serve drinks at home than to go to a bar and literally just waste money.

The Basis of a Good Cocktail… For Me. Maybe for You Too.

For me, the beginning of a good drink starts with citrus. Lemons, limes, oranges, they do and incredible show of cutting out the burning feeling of alcohol and lightening it up. From there its adding a flavor you like. My husband doesn’t like vodka so I tend to purchase white rum to be able to use it in a variety of cocktails: mojitos, spikes ice teas, and in this case, a daiquiri.

Nothing nicer than a blended frozen cocktail for the hot sunny days on the island.

What You’re Saving

Instead of paying $13 dollars for a plain Strawberry Daiquiri, we’re making them ourselves and paying 2.75 each for an upgrade Blood Orange Strawberry Daiquiri. That’s a $10 dollar saving and it takes just as long to make as it takes for a tender to serve you! Hmm… another good point is that it uses less sugar because it doesn’t use any of that “strawberry” syrup. It’s also a stronger cocktail because it doesn’t use ice to water down the drink. Also! Nope. I think that’s all I’ve got for this flavorful cocktail recipe.

Cooking Tips and Substitutions

The Strawberries

On the island it’s cheaper to buy frozen strawberries than to buy the fresh. But, you also want the strawberries frozen so you don’t need to add ice to the drink and water them down.

The Liquor

We’re using Bacardi Superior Rum for this drink, mainly because Brandon doesn’t like vodka. If you want to with it out, be sure to use a white liquor, you can evenuse​d flavored vodkas if you’re into that, like vanilla or whipped cream. Yeah, that exists.  

The Oranges

Blood oranges are in season right now, which is why I chose to use this vibrant, beautiful fruit. I was inspired by its​ deep red colors. The flavor is pretty intense but still very similar to normal oranges, so if you would like to switch out ​you’re more than welcome to do so.


IF you would like to add sweetness, maybe your’e strawberries weren’t ripe enough, you will need to add simple syrup.

Simple syrup is just equal parts water and sugar that has been dissolved. 

Cooking Fact

Sugar does not dissolve in cold beverages, so you make simple syrup for cocktail recipes so that the sweetness distributes evenly across the drink.

Blood Orange Strawberry Daiquiri

  • 4 oz Bacardi White Rum ($1.36)
  • 1 1/2 cup Frozen Strawberries ($1.08)
  • 2 Blood Orange ($3.06)


  • First, slice two pieces of orange and reserve for garnish.
  • In a blender add rum, frozen strawberries, and the juice and zest of blood oranges.
